The Lexus LBX is set to become the top-selling luxury model for Lexus in the UK. Based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, the LBX shares some components with the Yaris, but also features a redesigned body and higher equipment level.
As its lowest-priced SUV offering, Lexus have positioned the LBX as an entry-level vehicle in its series of Lexus SUVs that includes the UX, NX, RX and RZ. The competition for the LBX includes the Audi Q2, MINI Countryman, and DS3, as well as upcoming small SUVs from Alfa Romeo, Volvo, and MINI.
However, the LBX is not destined to compete with lower-end options such as the Renault Captur as it has been aimed at consumers who are attracted to the marque but have not previously considered purchasing one, or those who are downsizing from a larger Lexus model.
The interior of the Lexus UX 300e- or the LBX as it is known - is quite comfortable and spacious, with well-shaped seats and a good view out; the driving position is only slightly higher than that of a standard hatchback. The cabin design is fresh and functional without being too fancy or modern. Depending on the trim level, there are varying degrees of suedette and leather upholstery. The materials used throughout are sturdy and sensible, but some may look better than they feel to the touch.
The rear of the car may not be as spacious as one would hope as the rear seat is a little cramped, potentially making it uncomfortable for tall occupants. There are three seatbelts at the back, but it is not recommended to travel with five people in the LBX as the lack of legroom forces passengers to sit up straight, which highlights the lack of rear headroom.
The boot is 402 litres, or 317 in all-wheel-drive versions; in addition, the rear seat splits 60:40 and can fold to extend this space up to 994 litres. Lexus has also added various reinforcements and sound-deadening materials to reduce the level of noise inside the cabin. Acoustic glass is also used for the front and side windows.
All in all, the LBX provides a comfortable and functional interior, but in our view, it may not be the best choice for those who require a lot of passenger space.
